After release of new Microsoft Internet Explorer 8, few clients reported compatibility issues. Most common web site problems include shifting of site menu to the left and other positioning issues. We offer to fix compatibility problems for our clients free of charge. Please contact our development team.

This issues are only related to IE8. According to Microsoft, IE8 improves rendering of content authored to various web standards (like HTML, CSS and JavaScript) in standards mode. Such changes might cause it to break compatibility as its behavior differs significantly from that of IE7. In order to maintain backwards compatibility, sites can opt-into IE7-like handling of content by inserting a specially created meta element into the web page, that triggers the “IE7 standards mode” in the browser , using following meta tag:

This will force IE8 to use IE7 compatibility mode. EmulateIE7 mode tells Windows Internet Explorer to use the <!DOCTYPE> directive to determine how to render content. Standards mode directives are displayed in Internet Explorer 7 Standards mode, and Quirks mode directives are displayed in IE5 mode. Unlike IE7 mode, EmulateIE7 mode respects the <!DOCTYPE> directive. For many Web sites, this is the preferred compatibility mode.

As an option, user could switch IE8 into compatibility mode, clicking on Compatibility View button, located  next to web site URL field, but, of cause, since this is not IE8 default mode, web site in question will be broken when opened in IE8. Please contact us for detailed solution.

How many times you found yourself in a situation when web sites stop loading in your Explorer or Firefox? This is a very common situation with Internet Service Providers (ISP) in Thailand and especially in Pattaya. Both TOT and TT&T are well known for dropping ADSL connections on regular basis.

There are few things you could try to get your connection back.

First of all, unplug your ADSL router and wait 15 sec before plugging it back. This works in 90% of all cases. Rebooting ADSL router works like a magic in Pattaya on TOT connection. This will force router to obtain new set of IP parameters.

Less brutal way is to copy and paste these into Start – Run command line one by one:

IPCONFIG /flushdns

IPCONFIG /registerdns

IPCONFIG /displaydns

We receive these kind of questions almost every day. ISP in Thailand were always under the pressure by spammers, sending hundred and thousands e-mails every day. Many virus infected computers in internet cafés and offices, equipped with pirated copies of anti virus software do not help situation at all.

TOT and TT&T in Pattaya found a way to eliminate this problem by blocking all third party SMTP servers. Most people who have own web sites, use those servers to send and receive e-mails.

In most cases, own SMTP severs look like smtp.mydomain.com and use port 24 for outgoing e-mails. This port could be firewalled by your ISP. To be able to send e-mails out in Pattaya, you need to change your own SMTP server to server, provided by TOT or TT&T.

When switching to your ISP severs in Pattaya, do not forget to disable SMTP sever authentication. You can do that by deselecting  “My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication” box, usually located under “more settings” tab related to your e-mail client account configuration.

In Bangkok, you should use following SMTP servers for sending e-mails, depending on your Internet Service Providers (ISP). Please note, that in this case, SMTP authentication is not required and should be de-selected.

Very common problem here in Pattaya is the inability for users to view certain sites, in particular Live (Hotmail), Yahoo and Ebay. Quite often this is the result of an MTU problem.

What is MTU? MTU is a Maximum Transmission Unit, which is the greatest amount of data that can be transferred in one physical frame on the network. In plain English, when your PC requests data from these sites, they use something called Path MTU Discovery to check what size packets to send back to your PC. If the site is unable to check what size packet to send it uses the default MTU of 1500. This is a largest packet size, but in a reality in Pattaya or Phuket, there are certain gateways and routers on the Internet which use a smaller MTU, therefore the packets are too large to be transmitted and are rejected or dropped.

It is the job of Path MTU Discovery to find and report the smallest MTU setting between your PC and the remote site, so that the remote server sends out the correct sized packets. Large packet sizes will have to be fragmented.

What can I do to correct this?

You need to lower your MTU settings in your ADSL router and make sure that packets could be sent without fragmenting.

How to tweak your router?

Many routers have a setting in which you can change MTU size. You can change this, but you must make sure that the MTU setting on your router is the same as on your PC. It does not matter too much if the MTU on your router is higher than that on your PC, but the setting in your router must not be less than the MTU on your PC.

To determine your ISP MTU size, you need to ping it with different sets of MTU packets. A series of ping tests using the command, ping www.totisp.net -f -l xxxx, where xxxx is the packet size, can be used to determine the optimal MTU for your connection.

On Windows PC, go to Start and select Run.

Type in “cmd”, hit the enter key or click OK. The DOS prompt should open.
At the DOS prompt, type in ping www.totisp.net -f -l 1492 and hit the Enter key

Note the results above indicate that the packet needs to be fragmented. Lower the size the packet in increments of +/-10 (e.g. 1472, 1462, 1440, 1400) until you have a packet size that does not fragment.You will need to set up highest unfragmented MTU size in your router and PC.

Most of routers we seen, come with Australian version of firmware, which is not bad, but D-link people created special version for Thailand only.

There is not much of a difference between firmware kernels build for different countries, except default settings, but we found that flashing router with a proper firmware helps to overcome problems such as dropping ADSL connection and inability to dial up automatically. This prevents router from establishing connection to upstream router when ADSL connection is dropped. Many people found the only way to re-connect is to disconnect router power supply for 10-15 seconds and then reconnect.

For safety, we recommend to flash your DSL-604T router using web interface. Latest firmware is V2.00B01T01.TH.20061120, as you can see, it has TH properties and much better on TOT network than older V1.04

Just to remind you that TOT in Pattaya use VPI=1, VCI=32, G.dmt modulation and ANNEX_A. Most routers will have an option to set modulation and annex mode to automatic. We found that forcing it to G.dmt and Annex A produce better results.
